A Lineage 2 private server is an independent project that runs on a game emulator without NCSoft. These servers offer chronicles (from classic Interlude and High Five to modern Classic and Essence) and rates unavailable on official servers, plus a freer economy and custom settings. They suit players who want to return to a specific version of Lineage 2, play with faster progression, or try unique modifications.

The Lineage 2 rating covers the main chronicles: Interlude (C6), Gracia Final, High Five (CT2.6), Goddess of Destruction, Classic and Essence. Rates range from x1 (slow, close to official) to high multipliers of x1000 and above for fast PvP. A wipe is a full reset of game progress on a server: characters, gear and the economy start over. Planned wipes happen every few months to restart the economy and draw new players; well-run projects announce them in advance. A sudden wipe with no warning is a red flag that the administration cannot cope. Low-rate servers wipe the least often and tend to last longest. Beginners are usually most comfortable on mid-rates x15–x50: reaching the cap takes one to two weeks, the economy stays meaningful, and there is time to learn the mechanics.
